God especially condemns the Pharisees, who, like OT figures such as Balaam and Saul, loved the approbation of men more than the praise of God (Mt 23:6). Unlike these figures the Pharisee’s pride will not be rewarded with shame until Christ comes again (Lk 14:7–10). Thus the NT declares that the only way to earn eternal “praise and glory and honor” is to cultivate a genuine and thriving
